Small Spot Gardens is a San Francisco-based design/build landscaping company dedicated to helping urban residents experience the natural environment. We imagine, create and care for intimate gardens in city-sized spaces. About the position

We are seeking a garden care and landscape installation assistant to nurture existing gardens, as well as help build and plant new landscapes. This position has multiple responsibilities: 

  • Caring for maturing gardens (pruning, trimming, replanting, weeding, mowing, irrigation adjustments, etc) 
  • Assisting with the installation of new gardens (planting gardens, shopping for supplies, helping construct hardscape like patios and benches, installing irrigation, etc) 
  • A limited amount of time will be spent on administrative project management (tracking expenses, tracking garden care time and plans)

This is a full-time position based in San Francisco. Starting compensation is $26-28/hr depending on knowledge and skills with raise opportunities within several months. The company offers an employer sponsored medical plan and paid time off. 

Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will be: 

  • enthusiastic about plants, ecology and nature
  • focused on creating a safe working environment and very attentive to their surroundings
  • able to work independently and on small crews 
  • comfortable driving a vehicle on city streets and highways (candidate must have a valid drivers license)
  • experienced in pruning, trimming and caring for garden plants 
  • capable of lifting up to 25 lbs regularly (such as moving plants, tools and mulch) and 60 lbs occasionally (such as moving bags of concrete or stones)
  • capable of repetitive motion tasks (weeding, using pruners, bending, carrying, climbing stairs, crouching, etc) 
  • able to work in a physical, outdoor environment for a full day, including in hot, cold or inclement weather
  • conscious of overall garden aesthetics 
  • able to learn new construction skills quickly (previous construction experience is not required) 
  • comfortable communicating with clients in person
  • organized (recording information neatly and fully, keeping tools in the correct locations, etc)

Additional experience

  • prior professional experience in gardening, construction or other physical labor is highly desirable. 
  • proficiency and/or fluency in Spanish and English is preferred.
