This brick planter box is immediately inside the garden entrance of an apartment complex in the Lower Haight. It’s the first thing residents and their guests see upon returning home. There were only a couple scraggly plants trying to live in such low-light conditions. Adding shade-tolerant ferns and plants with broad leaves to efficiently capture any sunlight coming through the gate transformed the small space from barren to green. A little beyond this, the interior courtyard similarly received very little light, and there wasn’t much to draw the eye except a solitary fountain. This space is testament to how much the simple addition of well-selected species planted in movable containers can improve the feel of a darker, indoor environment.
